Q and A

Question

How soon can I eat after taking Odimune?

I hear you say its advisable to take odimune (efavrienz+ FTC+ tenofovir) at bed time and its only taken on empty stomach, how long exactly should i stay away from food before taking it? The reason i am asking this is I can not starve the whole day before taking the tablet.

Answer

Saying that Odimune needs to be taken on an ’empty stomach’ doesn’t mean you need to starve yourself. It is fine to eat something before or when you take this, but you have to be careful to make sure this is not a high fat meal.

A high fat meal will increase levels of efavirenz and so you may get more side effects (mood changes, anxiety, disorientation or interrupted sleep etc). Food low in fat or with just a little fat, will be fine.

More about this is explained in this question: What happens if don’t take Atripla on an empty stomach?

Odimune is a generic version of Atripla which includes the same meds but is just made by a different company.

    Hi Precious

Atroiza, Tribuss and Odimune are the same drugs with different names. They will help control HIV so you can lead a good life. Having HIV can be worrying so it is go to talk to you doctor about this. Also, it can help if you meet other HIV positive people, perhaps at a support organisation.

I was diagnosed in 2010 when I ws pregnant. my CD4 count was 650 and I never received any pills except AZT and Aizonoid to protect my baby nd me frm getting TB. But since last I went to the doctor because I had lumps under my armpits and on top of my vagina, he put me on pills and he gave me Atroiza, and changed to Tribuss. Now I am on Odimune. I am scared because I dnt knw hw is it going to treat me.

    Hi Lee,
All of these drugs contain the same ARVs. They generic versions or Atripla and are made by different companies which is why they have different names. But they will work in the same way and it is unlikely you will any different side effects. You can read more about generic drugs here.

Odimune is a generic version of Atripla that is recommended to take in the evening, before you go to bed.

It can be taken with or without food, but don’t take Odimune with a high fat meal. If you eat a high fat meal in the evening, then wait a couple of hours before taking Odimune.

    Hi

If your meds for shingles are aciclovir, then you can take is with or without food. This is something to check with your doctor or pharmacist though.

Without knowing your which HIV meds you are taking, I can’t talk about whether you need to take it with or without food. Again, please check the information that comes with your meds or ask a doctor or pharmacist.

    Good luck with your treatment.

My CD4 count is 344 which means I’m gonna start taking treatment. I’m still strong but I’ve just got shingles. Must I eat before taking it or must I wait to eat after I’ve took it?

    Hi Thabisile,
Although it’s normal to be nervous about changing treatment it isn’t possible to predict what side effects you will experience. The only drug that is changing in your treatment is the removal of nevirapine and the introduction of efavirenz. Efavirenz can be linked to side effects to do with mood and sleep, called CNS side effects. There’s information about efavirenz side effects in our FAQs. Please look there, and then let me know if you have any questions.
