Q and A

Question

How soon can I eat after taking Odimune?

I hear you say its advisable to take odimune (efavrienz+ FTC+ tenofovir) at bed time and its only taken on empty stomach, how long exactly should i stay away from food before taking it? The reason i am asking this is I can not starve the whole day before taking the tablet.

Answer

Saying that Odimune needs to be taken on an ’empty stomach’ doesn’t mean you need to starve yourself. It is fine to eat something before or when you take this, but you have to be careful to make sure this is not a high fat meal.

A high fat meal will increase levels of efavirenz and so you may get more side effects (mood changes, anxiety, disorientation or interrupted sleep etc). Food low in fat or with just a little fat, will be fine.

More about this is explained in this question: What happens if don’t take Atripla on an empty stomach?

Odimune is a generic version of Atripla which includes the same meds but is just made by a different company.

Yes, you can take Odimune on an empty stomach, and so a good time to take it is at bedtime. Taking Odimune with a high fat meal is not a good idea. A high fat meal will increase drug levels in your body, and this may also increase side effects.

One of the drugs in odimune can sometimes cause sleep disturbance and tiredness. But you should talk to your doctor about feeling dizzy. Ask your doctor to check for any interactions with the other meds and supplements you’re taking.

I started taking odimune 5 days ago but I’m feeling so dizzy every day, is it recommended to take it together with purbac double strength and activovite at the same time as my doctor directed me to do so.

Your baby is not at risk from the HIV meds.

Please talk to your doctor so that you can talk about your concerns.

    Hi Tseleng

The information about Odimune is not up to date. Odimune is now widely used during pregnancy and by women who are breast feeding.

In the UK there haven’t been worries about efavirenz (one of the meds in Odimune) for many years.

It is important that you talk to your clinic about your other symptoms. The clinic will need to look at what might be causing these.

Please do not stop treatment without talking to your clinic first. If this is related to side effects, than there are other HIV combinations that you might be able to use.

    Hi

I am 7 months pregnant and I was visiting the clinic last week on Wednesday, they’ve given me odimune to start with, I have 7 days using the treatment and I have read on the contra indications that odimune is not recommended for the pregnant women and also I should not breastfeed while using this treatment. Ever since I started using the treatment I feel sick, headache, dizziness at work, burning stomach and also more heartburn and now the baby he is no longer kicking as often as he was before. Is this medication also making him tired or is there any damage already?? is this means I wont be able to breastfeed him at least six months??

Please answer me because now I think of stoping to take treatment if its harmful for my child.
