Q and A

Question

Am I experiencing a hypersensitivity reaction to Abacavir?

One of the drugs I take for my HIV contains Abacavir. I have already had the HLAB5701 hypersensitivity test and have been on meds for 12 weeks now.

Over the last couple of days, I have had itchy skin and no rash. The doctor says I have dry skin. Could I still be at risk of developing hypersensitivity after 12 weeks?

Answer

Hello,

Thanks for your email.

Hypersensitivity reaction to abacavir occurs during the first six weeks of therapy in over 90% of cases. But it can rarely occur much later without any previous symptoms.

Itchy skin alone, however, is not a sign of a hypersensitivity reaction (HSR). The following are symptoms of HSR.

  • Temperature
  • Rash – normally raised and differing in colour from surrounding skin
  • Diarrhoea and abdominal pain
  • Tiredness and feeling generally unwell
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Flu-like aches and pains including muscle pain
  • Cough and shortness of breath
  • Sore throat

If these symptoms get progressively worse each day then this is an indication that it could be HSR.

If your only symptom is itchy skin then your doctor is likely to be right. If this does get worse, or you experience any other symptoms let your doctor know.
