Q and A

Question

Can I take prednisone with ARVs?

I’ve got recurring parotitis, was using antibiotics and prednisone with good effect. I started ARVs 2 weeks ago, now symptoms are recurring, is it safe to use prednisone with ARVs?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Some ARVs do have interactions with prednisone that can require a change in the dose you need. Without knowing which ARVs you are taking I can’t say for sure if there will be an interaction. The best thing to do is to check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking prednisone as they will be able to check this and make any changes required.

    Hi Deborah,

Acriptega is a brand name of DLT (dolutegravir/lamivudine/tenofovir). The drug interactions website says there’s no interaction expected with these meds and prednisone.

How is the treatment going? Would you like to ask more questions?

    Hi Sello,

    What medication are you taking?

At work every year we do medical test so now there is this new system where they check your urine to test drugs .They don’t do like before whereby the put a stick in your urine. Worse of all most people who are using certain medication they end up tested positive for drugs even if they don’t drugs due to the medication they using .I am wondering if you take HIV meds your urine will test positive for drugs?

    Hi Lesego,

Because your brother is in a lot of pain, its important that he sees a doctor. A doctor will be able to prescribe him something for the pain.

Prednisone is a drug, belonging to a group of drugs called corticosteroids. Corticosteroids have an anti-inflammatory action. Antiinflammatory medicines reduce pain, swelling, stiffness, redness and heat in affected joints.
