Q and A

Question

Questions about Tribuss

I was diagnosed with HIV in January 2013 during regular HIV testing. My CD4 count was 91 and my GP put me straight on Tribuss.

I’ve never been sick of any illness since July 2012. I’d like to know about Tribuss. What do I do if I forgot to take the pill and remember only the next day?

I have also been given Trixazole (Bactrim). Should I take the pill as well?

And what mult-vitamins will be good for me?

Answer

Hi,

I’m sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis but I’m glad to hear how well you are feeling. Do you have any support to deal with finding out you have HIV?

Tribuss is a combination pill which contains three antiretrovirals (ARVs). These are efavirenz, FTC and tenofovir. This is a very widely used combination for treating HIV. Tribuss is a generic version of Atripla. Other generic versions include Trustiva, Tribuss or Odimune. You can read general information about this drug on our HIV meds page.

If you realise you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. BUT, if you only realise when you’re going to take your next dose, do not take a double dose.

Bactrim/Trixazole are antibiotics which your doctor has given to make it less likely that you will get ill with infections like pneumonia. These are recommended for anybody with a CD4 under 200 and it’s important that you keep taking these. In some countries it is recommended to continue taking these antibiotics as long as your CD4 count is still below 350.

Multi-vitamins don’t treat HIV. Unless you have a vitamin deficiency there is unlikely to be any benefit from taking a multivitamin and they are essentially a waste of money. You are better off spending your money on a healthy diet which will do more to keep your body strong than a multivitamin.

    Hi T.bo.E,

Thanks for getting back to us. And for your support for this service.

To answer your quesiton HIV1 and HIV2 aren’t different stages of HIV. They’re types. For an explanation of the difference please see here:

Atripla, and its generic versions are very good ARVs. They do what they need to do, which is control a persons HIV. If resistance is found to be a problem, there are usually alternatives available. However, this will vary depending on where you live.

If what you are taking is working, then there is no need to change. There’s also no need to take more meds than needed.

  3. T.boE,

Ok.I was not aware of that. Wow,thank you.

Now since I’m treatment experienced that means I will stick on Atripla forever?
Now my question is since tribuss is the boss here what will happen if one has resistance and the viral load refuse to go below 100,000 copies. It simply means no alternative. Hence I wanted to know if I can take odimune/Tribuss with other pills. To answer your question no I didn’t have (HBV B) The problem I have some kind of rash at times on my genital like blisters. You see,so to be honest with you service in our clinics is not that good they’ll tell you its part of illness of HIV and treatment will take care, but as far as I’m concerned, this could be any STIs other than HIV. It could be Hpv or Hsv. Just like how i discovered I was HIV positive I wen’t to clinic several times in need of help for this genital problem. No one encouraged me to go through test until i had Shingles on my face.but anyway thank you and keep on doing the best for us All.(I’m sorry to ask this one but please can you try and find the answer for me).All this meds are written that they are for HIV-1 and others you’ll see written HIV1 this mean stages of HIV or types of HIV? Thanx a lot I love U…great thanx, bye.

    Hi T.boE.

Because you’ve already been taking various generic forms of Atripla you can’t take Eviplera. Eviplera (Complera in the US) is only recommended if a person is treatment naive and if your viral load is less then 100,000 copies. You aren’t treatment naive, so this isn’t an option for you. For more info on Eviplera, please see the following link:

With regards to your question about taking other meds with a fixed dosed combination, there really shouldn’t be any need as everything that you need is in a fixed dosed combination. For more information about ARVs please see our starting ARVs guide:

If you’re eating a lot, I can’t say if this is due to bactrim. Its good though that you are taking it as your CD4 is low and this will help protect you from type of pneumonia called PCP.

For the HSV 1, the only thing you can do it take whatever it is that you’ve been prescribed.
Do you also have HEP B?

  5. T.boE,

Kindly advice,is it Ok to change from TELURA to tribuss and from tribuss to COMPLERA?I started meds last month 11 nov 2016’CD4 216.At my clinic they had No atripla available so they gave Telura and now December Tribuss. So i thought Complera would do much better with me since I really injoy fatty stuff and eat alot. Maybe Bactrim could be the course of have me to eat this much, I’m always hungry. I would like to know if I can take any of the fixed dose combination pills together with either INTAGRACE inherbitor Or PROTEAS inherbitors. And what can be the difference between PI’s and II’s,and would ther be some kind of Interaction between them. Lastly On the case of HSV what can I do with that one, because all this meds seem to work alittle on Hypitasis B and other condition but not exectly herps simplex V. But since I started with meds the outbreaks are not itchy and only last for few days.will my condition be worse in the progress of Time. Thanx

    Hi Lillie,

    What ARVs are you taking?

If you wish to take moringa as a supplement, you should talk to your doctor about this.

  7. Lillie

    Hi,
Is it safe to take ARV with Moringa? I am HIV positive tested in 2008. But I have never get sick since.

    Hi Angel,

You may or may not have side effects. If you do though, they should go within a few weeks. Here’s a link on how to manage side effects:

    Thanks Lisa
So will i still have the side effects or will i be okay since they are the same only diff. is the cost.
    Angel

    Hi Angel,

Tribuss is just as effective as Atripla. It just costs a lot less. Therefore, you can definitely change to tribuss.
