Q and A

Question

Is Odimune safe in pregnancy?

I am an HIV positive woman and I am pregnant.

I have just received Odimune but I have a few concerns.

The leaflet which accompanies the batch states that Odimune is not recommended for pregnant women because safety and efficacy has not been established.

Is Odimune safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Answer

Hello,

Thanks for your email. We have a lot of questions from women taking this combination in pregnancy.

Odimune is a generic version of Atripla. This link is to a previous question about use in pregnancy. Atripla contains the same drugs as Odimune, it’s just a different name because it’s made by a different company.

If you have any questions after reading this please let me know and I will be more than happy to help!

    Hi,
It is not a good idea to stop taking treatment if you are pregnant as this will increase the risk of your baby being HIV positive. Why do you want to stop taking odimune? If you are having problems with side effects you may be able to change to a different treatment but it is very important to keep taking your treatment unless your doctor advises you to stop.

Calcium tabs are not a replacement for ARVs. Why do you want to take these?

Please talk to your doctor or nurse about any symptom. This includes diarrhoea. Your health worker needs to decline on how severe it is and whether other tests are needed, in order to best treat this. Some side effects get best within the first week or two on treatment. Your doctor needs to decide whether or not this is a side effect though or a symptoms of another health problem.

See this link for more information on diarrhoea as a side effect.

    Hello,
It’s important to talk to your doctor about these side effects. S/he should be able to give you anti-nausea medication to stop you from throwing up and help with your appetite. Many people have side effects like this in the first few weeks of treatment and these usually improve within a month or two. It is still important to talk to the doctor though so that you can get help with this.

Feeling dizzy is one of the side effects of efavirenz, which is included in Odimune.

This usually improves over the first few weeks but if this is still a problem, please speak to your doctor.

See this page for more information.
