Q and A

Question

Is Odimune safe in pregnancy?

I am an HIV positive woman and I am pregnant.

I have just received Odimune but I have a few concerns.

The leaflet which accompanies the batch states that Odimune is not recommended for pregnant women because safety and efficacy has not been established.

Is Odimune safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Answer

Hello,

Thanks for your email. We have a lot of questions from women taking this combination in pregnancy.

Odimune is a generic version of Atripla. This link is to a previous question about use in pregnancy. Atripla contains the same drugs as Odimune, it’s just a different name because it’s made by a different company.

If you have any questions after reading this please let me know and I will be more than happy to help!

    Hi Nomusa,

Omega-3 can reduce tryglcerides (and cholesterol to a lesser extent) and can reduce risk of heart disease when diet changes haven’t reduced these to target levels. They are safe to take when taking odimune.

I’ve been given odimune today so I’m wondering if I should continue taking my preg-omega-plus?

Hi Nolufefe – it sounds like continuing to talk is a good idea. It seems like your partner is not running away at the idea – and he may be negative. If your viral load is undetectable you can explain that he doesn’t need meds becasue the risk is close to zero. Or it might be that he want support to test again. Because of your experience you understand a lot about HIV.

I was diagnosed Hiv+ and then later advised to take Odimune,i’m sexully active with my partner,i never asked him about his status but he once told me that he is negative. The challenge is when i was given the medication by the Dr he visited home so he only saw the meds when he came back, the time i took them in his presence he asked me what medication is that & i told him it’s for my Hiv status but he didn’t take me serious & now i’m afraid of what might happen if he can really see that it’s medication for Hiv+ people, because whenever i bring up the topic he only answers by saying”If you are hiv+ then i must just join you in taking the meds”please help, what should i do?

    Hi,

This is common now and very possible. HIV treatment protects both the negative partner and baby during pregnancy and childbirth.

You can find more information here:

    Hi Lebo

It is good that you are on meds. This will be better both for your health and for your baby.

It is likely that your first meds were the same combination as Odimune – just with a different name and manufacturer.

Please ask your doctor to confirm this though.

Please talk to you doctor about any other worries or with any other questions – or get back to me if you have other questiuon too.

    best wishes
