Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Theresia,

Though not ideal, there is research that demonstrates that atrozia can be taken less frequently. Please see here:

This meaning that it is highly unlikely that you will have developed any form of resistance to your meds. If you are worried, I would ask for a resistance test to be carried out.

    Hi
I really need your help, I have been infected with HIV for 10 years now, been on medication since 2015, I take atroiza. But we ran out of medication and I skipped medication for 3days. My viral load is undetectable. Is there any possibility of being drug resistance and what advise could you give me.

    Hi Irese,

How long have you been taking atrozia for? How do you take it, without or with food, or just after food? How much weight have you lost, and over what time period? Do you know what your CD4 count is?

If you could get back to us, we’ll be able to help.

    Hi Noluthando,

Tribuss and atrozia are generic versions of Atripla. This means that they contain the same drugs. Therefore, you feeling tired could be unrelated to your change in meds.

Hi I’ve been using tribuss pills and they were good to me. Now I was given atroiza and its not treating me well. I’m always tired what can I do?

    Hi Miss,

I don’t know what could be causing you to vomit so often. Therefore, you should go and see your doctor. It could be the atrozia, or something else. Is there an chance that you might be pregnant?

    Hi Azande,

    Congratulations on your pregnancy.

How are you coping with being on meds? Have you had any side effects?

I can’t tell you if you baby is going to be negative. However, being on meds is the best thing that you can do to help prevent transmitting HIV to your baby. For more info please see our HIV and pregnancy guide:

    http://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy

With regards to your body changing, this can happen. However, it’s now less common. One thing to note though, is that women’s bodies change during pregnancy and quit often they are not the same as they were before a pregnancy. Therefore, it will be hard for you to know if the ARVs are effecting your body shape.

Telling people you care about can be difficult, however perhaps you could introduce the subject of HIV into conversation and see how they react. Have you thought that your baby daddy may also be positive?
