Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

Wasn’t told my CD4 count but was given Atroiza by an NGO. Haven’t started using it since l need advice on how and why I am supposed to be using it and for how long and how often.

I only found out that I have HIV this year in February. I’m starting to take atrozia. They said my CD4 is 204 so I wanna know how long should I take this pill.

Also I had one test that said I was negative, another positive.

    Hi Hauza,

Its very possible to have a false negative test result. Which test was negative, the first or second?

Other than your CD4 count, do you know what your viral load is? Knowing your viral load would help confirm your HIV positive status.

When someone starts ART, they will need to take it for life. This is because as of yet there is no cure for HIV. ART is though very effective and it will control your HIV. Please see here for more info:

Other then the atrozia, have you been given anything else to take?

    Hi Bongani,

Do you mean the risks of transmission? If you do, then yes, because you’ve just started ART you will be able to transmit the virus.

If this wasn’t what you were concerned about, would you mind explaining more?

Also, how are you coping with your diagnoses? Are you able to get any help and support?

I tested positive on the 15/03/17 and they gave me the medication on the 30/03/17 but they didn’t tell me my CD4 count so I’m wondering about the risks, pls help

    Hi Lobisa,

We get asked a lot about life expectancy, for some information please see here:

    http://i-base.info/qa/?s=life+expectancy

Other than the atrozia, what else are you taking? I’m asking because owing to your CD4 count you should also be taking co-trixmoxazole. Is this something that you’re taking? Also how long have you been on meds?

    Hi Violet,

i-base is a service that is for people who are HIV positive. If you think you may have been at risk you will need to test. Please see Q1 here:

    http://i-base.info/qa/what-are-the-most-asked-questions

If, however your boyfriend is on treatment and has an undetectable viral load the risk of transmission is close to zero. For more info, please see the results of the PARTNER study:

    Hi Sisiphiwe,

ARVs are for life. This is because as of yet there isn’t a cure. They are though excellent at controlling a persons HIV.
