Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Patricia,
Its good to hear that you are not getting any side effects. This is nothing to worry about. BEcause it has been two months since you started treatment you are unlikely now to get new side effects. Taking the pill at night is a good idea and recommend to reduce side effects.

    Hi guys,
It’s been two months now since I started the pill(Atroiza). Never had any side effects I don’t know know whether it still earlly to tell or because I take my pill at night and after that I drink lots and lots of water

    Hi Tracy

This is important to talk to your doctor about.

Efavirenz is one of the meds in Atroiza and it is not recommended for people who work different shifts.

If you are still having side effects after four months, please speak to your doctor. There are likely to be alternatives that will be just as good at controlling HIV but which are easier to tolerate for shift work.

    Hi Lebo

Please see the information on lipodystrophy and especially on fat accumulation, in this guide:
    http://i-base.info/guides/side

If this is a side effect of your HIV meds, unfortunately, the most practical solution is diet and exercise.

Even though this is difficult for many people, is is one of the few options that can work.
