Question

My brother is having side effects with Atroiza

My brother is 35 and HIV positive.

He has been using Atroiza for a week. CD4 is 216 and he’s always dizzy, has lost weight, is not eating well and i think he’ losing his mind. Please help!

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email. Atroiza contains a drug called efavirenz that can affect your emotions and they way you act. For some people it can seem like you are going crazy.

Usually these side effects will improve after the first few weeks of treatment but for some people these can be severe or may not improve over time. If you are worried it is important that your brother talks to his doctor so that they can assess the severity of his side effects.

Some people need to change to different treatment very early on though if these side effects are severe.

Please see this page in our side effects guide for more information.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

    Hi Lefa

Please contact your doctor or clinic or health cente about this.

About 1 in 5 people get a rash with Atroiza and this is usually mild.

A doctor needs to talk to you about the symtoms, and perhaps also see this. In a smaller group of people the rash can be more serious.

    Please do this today.

    Hi,

These are both generic versions (copies) of a pill called Atripla. They all contain the same ingredients and work in the same way.

I was taking Tribuss for three years. Now I’m taking Atroiza due to financial constraints. Is there any difference between the two? Its been a week now taking it.

    Hi Nozie

Please talk to your doctor or health worker about any symptoms.

They will have information from your medical history to decide what is causing this, and what is the best thing to do.

Please don’t just put up with feeling like this. Please talk to a health worker.

    Hi,

Your symptoms are unlikely to be cause by your change from Atripla to Atroiza. This is because Atroiza is actually a generic version (a copy) of Atripla. This means it contains the same ingredients and works in the same way. It only has a different name because it is made by a different company.

You should talk to your clinic or doctor and tell them about your symptoms. This is especially important because they are causing you pain. They can help you work out what is causing them and how to treat them.

I have terrible muscular pains and have taken blood for arthritis and nothing was there. I am very certain that is Atroiza meds. As when I take Atripla I don’t get such complications of muscular pains and they are extremely sore.
