Question

My brother is having side effects with Atroiza

My brother is 35 and HIV positive.

He has been using Atroiza for a week. CD4 is 216 and he’s always dizzy, has lost weight, is not eating well and i think he’ losing his mind. Please help!

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email. Atroiza contains a drug called efavirenz that can affect your emotions and they way you act. For some people it can seem like you are going crazy.

Usually these side effects will improve after the first few weeks of treatment but for some people these can be severe or may not improve over time. If you are worried it is important that your brother talks to his doctor so that they can assess the severity of his side effects.

Some people need to change to different treatment very early on though if these side effects are severe.

Please see this page in our side effects guide for more information.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Hi Mxo – these all sounds like side effects of efavirenz, including the enlarged breast. In the UK advice would be to change treatment if the dizziness, nightmares and sleep problems do not improve. I have heard of rapid development of breast changes – called gynaecomastia – though this is not common. Changing treatment might help this too.

Hi, It sounds like this is a really tough time at the moment. Testing positive is a difficult time for most people. And finding out when you’re pregnant can make it even harder.

But just right now, your health and your baby’s health must come first. Have you started treatment? Is that why you commented about Atroiza?

Starting HIV meds (ART) can help to keep you healthy. ART can also mean that your baby is born HIV negative. Here’s a link to the guide to HIV, women’s health and pregnancy:

The decision about when or how to tell your boyfriend is a difficult one. Do you have support for this? Can you ask your doctor or clinic to help?

If telling him now will cause you more stress which could affect the pregnancy then maybe that isn’t a good option. On the other hand if you need your partner’s support and cannot cope with finding out you are positive and being pregnant then you might think it is better to tell him.

It’s important that you have support while you make sure you stay on treatment and keep healthy.

The TAC might be able to help with this. TAC stands for the Treatment Action Campaign. This is the largest HIV positive support organisation in South Africa and they were responsible for the drive to get ARVs available in SA.

The main office is in Cape Town, but there are support groups and branches across the country, including in Jo’burg.

Please let me know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Roy

    Hi
I tested HIV+ today and pregnant I’m scared and can’t honestly realise that I have HIV. I don’t even know how to tell my boyfriend father of my baby. I feel like I let him down and myself.

    Hi Innocentia

Yes, once of the drugs in Atroiza called efavirenz has mod changes as a side effect.

If this is causing problmes please speak to your doctor in case you can change to an alternative drug.

    Hi Anele

It is difficult to comment without knowing your current weight, your traget weight and your weight before treatment.

Pelase talk to your docto about this – especially if this is more htan a 5% weight loss.

This is to know whether another infection might be involved. What is your CD4 count?

If your girlfriend has an undetectable viral load and is taking HIV treatment, then the risk is close to zero.

Please see transmission questions that are already answer in the FAQ page:

    Or in this online guide:
