Q and A

Question

What time should I take my ARVs?

I recently discoverd that I’m HIV and pregnant and my CD4 is above 500. I just want to know what is the right time to drink medication? Because I eat at 18h30 and drink the tablets at 19h00 is it safe?

Answer

Hi,

I’m sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis but congratulations on your pregnancy!

The right time to take your medication will depend on which drugs you are taking. Can you tell me the names of the tablets you are taking?

Information about how to take different ARVs can be found on our meds page.

    Hi worried,

Though not common, this can happen. What medication are you taking? Have you discussed this with your doctor?

    Hi Lihle,

Did the doctor give you any other meds to take? Adco-emtevir contains just 2 of the drugs in Trivenz. So it’s not used to treat people who are HIV positive.

What did the doctor say about this change? It’s important to call the doctor and ask about adding another drug to these meds.

If you live in South Africa you can contact the Treatment Action Campaign. They can give local support to help you get the right HIV treatment.

    Hi No Name,

Info about Trivenz, which is a generic version of Atripla can be found here: http://i-base.info/guides/1561 Taking it a few hours either side of 9pm would be fine. The reason why its recommended to take it before you go to sleep is that this can help reduce the side effects.

    Hi Curious,

Do you mean 5 tablets per day?

The standard adult dose for Aluvia is 2 x 250 mg tablets, twice-daily. Standard adult dose for Dumiva is 1 x tablet (containing 300 mg 3TC + 600 mg abacavir), once-daily.

What does your doctor say about your weight loss. And do you have access to your CD4 and viral load results?

  8. Curious

My doctor decided to change my medication from one dose to 5 dose per day, I’m now taking aluvia nd dumiva. Since then I’m loosing wait everyday, how long is this going to happen??

    Hi Katlego,

The ARVs in Atenef and Odimune are the same. They have different names because they are made by different companies. Please see this link to Atripla for more about these ARVs.

But do you have access to your CD4 count and your viral load results? And what does the doctor say about switching from Atenef to Odimune and your side effects?

Please let us know more info. Did you start ART in September 2018?

    Hi
I took atenef from September 2018 and they changed them to odimune in October 2018. I keep having side effects like diahrea, vomiting and flu. What is wrong with my body?
