Q and A

Question

What time should I take my ARVs?

I recently discoverd that I’m HIV and pregnant and my CD4 is above 500. I just want to know what is the right time to drink medication? Because I eat at 18h30 and drink the tablets at 19h00 is it safe?

Answer

Hi,

I’m sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis but congratulations on your pregnancy!

The right time to take your medication will depend on which drugs you are taking. Can you tell me the names of the tablets you are taking?

Information about how to take different ARVs can be found on our meds page.

Hi, if your viral load is already undetectable, then this three hour window is likely to be fine. If you have only just started treatment or your viral load is not yet undetectable, it would be better to aim for the same time until it becomes undetectable.

Also, the need to take Eviplera with food is probably more important than the exact time. So long as you are taking meds with at least 400 kcal of food, this will be okay.

It is easy to change to the earlier time. Just change on the day that you want to, bringing the dose forward and then sticking to the new time.

    Hi Mazola

Without more information it is difficult to comment. This might be related to other infections like hepatitis, or to alcohol use or other drug, or sometimes HIV meds. Please ask your doctor about the cause and how important this is.

It’s important to check with your doctor if you are taking any nutrition supplements along with your ARVs.

Some vitamins, minerals and herbs can interact with some ARVs. You can ask your doctor if there are any supplements that might affect on your particular ARVs.

I am sure this is fine. It the empty stomach related to efavirenz, it is okay to eat, just not high fat meals.

I usually take it by 9:30pm. Today I took it exactly when I was eating but had to stop eating immediately. I had to eat because I had no food in my stomach. Hope I haven’t broken any rule. And I need to gain weight. Though my body weight is normal 75kg by my body size dropped bad that I had to answer too many questions from friends. What do I do to add up

It’s important to take into account what ARVs you’re on. If one of your meds is efavirenz then it’s recommended that you take it before you go to bed to reduce side effects.
