Q and A

Question

Can I get pregnant with a CD4 count of 360?

Does my CD4 count have an impact on the development of the baby if I get pregnant?

Is there a recommended level of CD4 count before getting pregnant?. I am HIV-positive and my viral load is undetectable, so is my partner.

I want to have a baby but am worried that my CD4 is so low at 360.

Answer

Thanks for your question and for letting us answer it online.

Your current CD4 count is very good. Responses to treatment are very individual, and without knowing your treatment history it is difficult to comment further. However, many women have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies with similar CD4 counts.

Just as importantly, your viral load is undetectable, and if it stay this low through the pregnancy and during birth, then the risk of your baby being infected with HIV is incredibly low – perhaps less than 1-2%.

If you and your partner want to try for a baby now, there is no reason why your current CD4 count should stop you.

It is a good idea to speak to your doctor in case there is other support that you can get,

    Hi Beatrice,

When someone is thinking about having a child, what’s important is their viral load and not their CD4 count. If you’re on treatment and your viral load is undetectable the risk of transmitting HIV is drastically reduced. Please see here: http://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy

    Hi Vrushali,

A CD4 count of 560 is within the normal range for someone who is HIV negative. The normal CD4 range for HIV negative people is between 400 – 1600.

Did you start HIV treatment (ART) 1 year ago? What meds are you taking. Do you have access to your viral load result.

    Hi Raj,

It’s great you’re taking ART and you’re undetectable. Have you been undetectable for several months? If so, you can try for a baby as soon as you like. A CD4 count of 718 is strong.

Taking ART and being undetectable are the precautionary steps for your partner and your pregnancy. Here is the guide to HIV, pregnancy and women’s health. It has all the info you need to help you have a healthy HIV negative baby.

    Hi Paul,
Congratulations on your wedding plans. And I hope your partner is taking HIV treatment with an undetectable viral load. If this is the case, it looks like you’re good for marriage.

Please see this simple answer to Undetectable = Untransmittable. If HIV is undetectable it can help your partner to be healthy. HIV positive people who are on ART with undetectable HIV can have a life expectancy similar to someone who is HIV negative.

    Hi Gladys,
    Congratulations on your pregnancy.
A CD4 count of 1026 shows your immune system is strong. Are you HIV positive? What meds are you taking and what’s your viral load?

Hi my cd4 count is 1026 and I’m 19weeks pregnant
