Question

What are the side effects of Reydin – do any ARVs not have side effects?

Hi there, what are the side effects of Reydin and are there any ARVs that don’t have side effects?

My doctor gave me Reydin and I was drinking it at night at first. My gums started bleeding and after that I had trouble concentrating. I also forget very easily. It is like I’m loosing my mind, what could be the problem?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Reydin is a generic version of TLD. This link is to a previous question about all TLD side effects.

Most ARVs have some side effects but only for some people. Many people don’t get side effects. Sometimes you might need to try different meds if you have difficulty with one.

Reydin does not cause bleeding gums. Have you mentioned this symptom to a doctor?

How are you sleeping at night? Reydin is often best tolerated when taken during the morning. It can cause problems sleeping. If this is the case it would explain why you are having trouble concentrating.

If you have any further questions do get in touch,

Josh.

Hi Jane, thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds like you are doing everything right – especailly in talking with your doctor. Hopefully, your clinic will weight you at every visit and also measure your waist and hips and include these results in your notes. This way the doctor will jave a record of the changes, which hopefully might stabilise now and not get worse.

Currently researchers think that your new drugs are not directly causing the wight changes though. Instead, they think that the previous meds that you were taking was reducing your weight. This is why switching treatment is not likely to help, because you don’t want to return to the liver probkems. Other studies switching to different HIV meds also haven’t shown a benefit.

It is good that you are keeping physically active and are being carfeul with eating a healthy balanced diet as these will help.

I was on trenvir until last year June, then my dr moved me to Reydin. I would say I started noticing weight gain around my torso within 3 months.
I have always gone to gym and I follow a 95% gluten free diet.
I really am not sure what else to do to get rid of the mom pouch. I have been to the dr and he is not keen on changing my meds as they are working better than the trenvir (trenvir was causing liver issues)

Hello Sibongile and thanks for getting in touch.

Yes, your doctor is right: you should take your tablets daily.

That will ensure that both you and your baby will be alright.

Please don’t worry, follow your doctor’s advice and give yourself sometime to learn more about HIV and what it means for you.

I don’t know why the doctor gave you meds and didn’t tell you that there is zero risk of your partner is on effective ART.

Hello Lesedi and thanks for getting in touch.

The switch your doctor suggested is in line with most recent guidelines, while Reydin is considered a much better treatment option with less side effects.

How long ago did you change medication?

It might take a few months for your body to get used to the new medication.

However, if you feel your old medication was a better fit for you, you can always discuss with your doctor if you could go back to Atroiza.

I would suggest giving it a few months though before making a decision
