Question
I am concerned about the window period, should I test again?
10 June 2010. Related: All topics, HIV testing, HIV transmission.
I recently had unprotected sex with a woman and was only inside her for a moment. She got tested with the EIA test a few days later and the result was negative. I too got test and my result was negative.
However I am concerned about the ‘window period’ issue and whether I may have contracted HIV as I have no idea about this woman’s sexual history. What do you suggest I do? I am extremely anxious and worried?
Answer
Thank you for your question.
Please follow this link to a more detailed explanation of the different tests and the length of their window period. Most tests are accurate 2-3 weeks after a possible exposure. If you tested before this time you may want to test again to confirm you are HIV negative.
