Q and A

Question

How accurate are fourth generation tests?

I wanted to ask a question. I had unprotected sex while I was abroad, a few times. I am having all my tests done in a private clinic.

I have been told to test up to 6 weeks with all the tests I want
PCR DNA
HIV Duo
HIV Duo again at 6 weeks
Normal test at GP in 8 weeks.

I am just worried that these tests won’t pick up the infection. Do all HIV tests for all kinds of HIV?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

It is not clear if you are based in the UK or not. If you are based in the UK then all the above mentioned tests are free on the NHS and there is no need to go private. The services are the same.

One ‘fourth generation’ test is all you need. They are over 99.5% accurate 3-4 weeks after a possible exposure. They pick up all types of HIV. If you have been infected your results will show positive.

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I’m parveen from new delhi, india. I had unprotected sex on 25th June 2016. I have tested 4th generation HIV1/2 antibodies &p24 antigen (DUO) test from india’s renowned DR. Lal paths. Results are as below.

first test was done at 6th Week after exposure, result was non reactive with index value 0.08.

Second test was at 8th week after exposure, result was non reactive with index value 0.01.

Its conclusive ? further retested again?

Appreciate & seeking for quick response please

    Regards
