Q and A

Question

Is my premature ejaculation related to HIV?

Hi,
I have been HIV positive for more than 6 years and am still without any treatment. Recently I am facing a challenge with sex – early ejaculation. Can this be connected with the virus? How can I be free of this problem if this is the place to ask such a question, please provide me your usual help!

Thank you

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Sexual dysfunction is a common problem in people with HIV. This is mainly related to erectile dysfunction, reduced sex drive, and difficulty reaching orgasm. However, premature ejaculation could be realted to psychosocial factors which are similar in all sexual dysfunctions related to HIV. You need to talk to your HIV doctor so that he/she can find out what is causing this.

    Hi Alex,

If you’re asking if it’s still ok to have sex and to orgasm, then the answer is yes. This won’t have any affect on your HIV.

I just start taking my arv medication 5 days I think and I masturbate and ejaculate, will it affect the arv med shielding my cd4 cells? Is it bad for me?

    Hi Sam,

ARVs are not likely to cause watery sperm. Changes in your diet is the main factor. Especially if you’re drinking more liquids. The more water you drink, the more watery the semen. Caffeine and alcohol can also affect the texture, making the semen viscous and thick. Age can be a factor too.

Please see this link to sexual health in the guide to side effects and quality of life. You can see there can be many reasons for premature ejaculation. But you can talk to your doctor about this and ask for possible treatment.

    Hi Tom,
Yes, it’s a good idea to talk to the doctor and try to find out what’s causing this.

I don’t do it often so when I do it well not trying to go into details the main issue is I can not cum. It gets erect but just does not come out I am on the meds I guess I just have to talk with my doctor about this

    Hi Luvo,

i-base advocates aren’t medical doctors, therefore we can’t tell you what to take. As the post above discusses you should seek medical advise.
