Q and A

Question

What are my chances in South Africa?

I am HIV+ and still not on meds. I have honoured my hospital appointments regiously since the diagnosis. I live in South Africa and am in my mid thirties. My question is, with the bad history we have in terms HIV treatment in the country and the medications we have as a developing country, what are my chances of reaching ripe old age?

Answer

Currently really good. You have a new sensible (at last) minster of health, which we all hope will change the situation. Treatment Action Campaign does a great job in terms of ensuring access to treatment.

In addition, you already have the majority of the medications that we have here in the UK. So, in fact you just need to find the hospital that has the experience and expertise to treat you properly. Everything will be fine, I am sure.
