6.14 Breastfeeding

HIV can be transmitted to the baby from breast milk.

Bottle feeding

In high-income countries bottle feeding with formula milk is strongly recommended for HIV positive mothers.

Safer breastfeeding

In countries where replacement feeding is not safe or available, the WHO infant feeding guidelines recommends that breastfeeding is safer if the mother receives ART.
