Q and A

Question

Is a CD4 count of 440 good before starting treatment?

Hi, I am HIV and i started my treatment last week. My CD Count is 446, is that good?

Answer

Hi

Thanks for your question.

Although everyone is individual, a count above 350 before starting treatment is still pretty good.

You were higher than this and closer to 500 which is often referred to as “normal”.

It is good you have started treatment (ART).

This should help your CD4 count get well above 500 over the next year or two.

    Hi João,
The normal CD4 range for an HIV negative person is between 460 and 1600. You can read more about CD4 count here. And many HIV negative people are healthy with a CD4 count below 460. Once on HIV treatment (ART) the viral load is important because it’s good for your health. Being undetectable also means that U=U (Undetectable=Untransmittable).
