Q and A

Question

When should I start treatment so that I don’t transmit HIV to my baby?

My girlfriend is HIV positive and I’m HIV negative, I’d like to have a family with her as I love her very much and wanna marry her. I’ve read about making her pregnant by pouring my sperm into a container and putting it inside her vagina using a syringe. So my question is that if she gets pregnant in a period of how many months pregnant must she begin the treatment to prevent the baby from being infected??

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

WHO guidelines are that if you are HIV+, you should be on treatment. This is regardless of your CD4 count. Therefore, even if your partner is not pregnant she should be on meds. This is for her own health.

Your partner being on meds will also reduce to the risk of transmission to you. The recent PARTNER study says the risk is close to zero. Please see:

Reduced transmission means that you would not need to use a syrigne. And that you could if you wish, concieve more naturally.

If you partner is not ready to take meds, then if she falls pregnant she will need to begin taking meds at 20 weeks gestation. The following guide is about HIV and pregnancy:

Good luck.
