Q and A

Question

Can I change the time I take Sustiva (efavirenz) when I travel?

I have been on Truvada and Sustiva for about 4 month. (I have undetectable viral load and CD4 around 300). No real side affects and I take the med at 22.00 pm every day. Travelling to another timezone makes me take the med at 1700.

Thus in daytime europe and light. Feeling very weird and have to stay in bed for a couple of hours.(It starts after about one hour).

Feels like being drunk, but no fun. It is only a 10 day vacation. Should I reschedule my meds for 2200, thus being five hours late and then switch back again?

Answer

Hello,

Thank-you for your question.

The side effects you are describing are very common with efavirenz (Sustiva).

It’s best to take these before bed, to minimise the effect of the side effects. Because your viral load is undetectable it should be fine to change your dose and be a few hours late one time. This is unlikely to cause any problems.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday!
