Q and A

Question

I’m 20 weeks pregnant, will my baby be ok?

I have just been diagnosed and have only just started meds. I’m 20 weeks pregnant. Will my baby be ok?

Answer

Hi,

Congratulations on you pregnancy.

it is great that you have started meds. In the UK guidelines recommend that you start treatment by 24 weeks, so you have already done this.

The aim of taking meds when you are pregnant is to get an undetectable viral load. This means HIV is at a very low level in your body. This will help prevent your child becoming positive. Taking meds is also good for your health! It usually takes somewhere between one and three months to become undetectable.

Hi Raisibe, what would you like to know? Being HIV positive and on treatment will not effect your chances of having a baby.

Hi Tria, Congratulations on your pregnancy!
Your child is most at risk of HIV around the time of labour and delivery. The biggest risk to an unborn child is the mother’s viral load. This is a measure of how much HIV is in your blood. Starting Tribuss can get your viral load to undetectable. It usually takes between one and three months to become undetectable.
If you’re both HIV positive having sex without a condom doesn’t change the risk of HIV to your baby’s health.

Hi, I just found out at 26 weeks according to clinic and 22 according to gyne that I am HIV positive. I start Tribuss today. I just told my partner about my status. Can we continue to have sex without a condom without infecting our unborn child if he hasn’t started treatment? And when he has started will we infect our child if we don’t use protection?
