Question

Can i access treatment in the UK?

I am from outside of the EU and i have a place at a UK university. I’m HIV positive and taking meds. Will i be able to access treatment in the UK? Will it be the same combination?

Answer

Hi,

You should have no problem accessing treatment in the UK. HIV treatment is free for everyone that needs it. This is regardless of immigration status, residency or citizenship.

This covers testing and monitoring when you are an out=patient. If you are hopsilatised for something more serious of complicated, this might not be covered – just HIIV treatment and monitoring.

Whether  or not you will get the same medication depends on what you are currently on. There are some meds used in other countries that are not usually used in the UK anymore. This is because there are better meds available.

If you do need to change treatment it would hopefullybe better.

When you do come bring several weeks of meds with you – or even a month or two. This is because sometimes it give you plenty of time to get registered with a clinic here.
