Q and A

Question

I had unprotected sex with my positive girlfriend, what are my chances?

I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend who is on treatment. I have a headache and think that i might have HIV now. What are my chances?

Answer

Hi,

Because your girlfriend is on treatment it is very unlikely that you have gotten HIV from her. If she has been on effective treatment for a couple of months there is close to zero risk of transmission.

Because of this your headache is probably not caused by HIV. If you wait 28 days after this event a test will accurately show you if you have HIV or not.

    Hi Owen,

Your girlfriend being HIV positive shouldn’t be a barrier to your relationship. People from all over the world are in relationships with people who are positive and they are negative. They also engage is sex without condoms and have families.

What is it that you’re worried about?

Hi, Congratulations on wanting to have a baby.

Many HIV positive women have had HIV negative babies. Being on HIV treatment, and having an undetectable viral load, is important in pregnancy because it will help protect the baby. This can help to keep you HIV negative too. There is also some protection for you in being circumcised.

Talk to the doctor about planning your child.

You can find more information about having a baby when one partner is positive and the other is negative here:

Hi, I am a guy who is circumcised and I am HIV negative but my wife is HIV positive. She has been on a treatment for years now. We were always using protection when we have sex but now cause we want to have a baby, we stop using a condom. So what are the chances for me to get infected.
