Q and A

Question

Which foods increase CD4 count?

I want to increase my CD4 count. Which foods should i eat to do this?

Answer

Hi,

A healthy balanced diet is important for everyone, especially people with HIV.

However HIV treatment is the only thing that will reliably increase your CD4 count. This will slowly start to happen after you start treatment, if you have not already.

You can have a look at this online guide for information about HIV and nutrition.

And our online guide with information about HIV treatment.

    Hi Eric,

What was your CD4 count when you were diagnosed? If you can tell me what meds you’re taking I’ll be able to tell you if you need to take them once or twice a day.

    Hi Melanie,

What do you mean by smell?

Instead of stopping meds, have you though about changing them? Also for what will happen if you stop meds, please see Q7 here:

Everyone’s CD4 count goes up and down, even if you’re HIV negative. Sometimes your CD4 count drops when you have an infection, such as a cold or flu.

If my CD4 count drops while I’m taking treatment what does that mean?

  9. Roy Trevelion

Yes, it’s good if your CD4 count increases. It means your immune system is getting stronger, and this will help fight off other infections. HIV negative people have CD4 counts anywhere between 400 and 1,600.

Is it OK if your CD4 count increases? What’s the normal number?
