Q and A

Question

Which foods increase CD4 count?

I want to increase my CD4 count. Which foods should i eat to do this?

Answer

Hi,

A healthy balanced diet is important for everyone, especially people with HIV.

However HIV treatment is the only thing that will reliably increase your CD4 count. This will slowly start to happen after you start treatment, if you have not already.

You can have a look at this online guide for information about HIV and nutrition.

And our online guide with information about HIV treatment.

    Hi Michael,

    Thanks for your comments.

Its been scientifically proven that the only thing that can control a persons HIV is ART. If however, you have evidence to suggest otherwise, do please share it with us and the scientific community.

    Hi Rahul,

The only way a person can increase their CD4 count is by taking ARVs. If your friend is on ARVs, they are already doing the best thing possible.

    Hi Tharun,

Your friends CD4 is very low. If she’s not already on medication she will need to start ASAP. She will need specialist care. She should also follow the advise that’s given here:

Hi Stacey, it is good that your friend is now on treatment as the CD4 count was very low. In general the CD4 count should get higher again now, but this is likely to take time. For example, it might take 6-12 months to get above 100 and another 6-12 months to get to 200. Energy levels should start to improve more quickly though.
