Q and A

Question

Can i change the time i take my ARVs?

I take my ARVs at 8am and 8pm. Can i change it to 10am and 10pm?

Answer

Hi,

This is not a problem as long as you consistently take them at the new time. Jumping back and forth mean you have a risk of developing resistance. This would mean your meds would stop working well.

People do change the time they take their meds for all sorts of reasons though. Again this is ok as long as you keep taking regularly at the new time.

The only concern about switching from evening to morning is if your combination include the drug efavirenz. Efavirenz needs to be taken 1-2 hours before you sleep, so you reduce side effects.

    Hi Anonymous,

Are you on medication? If you’re on medication and your viral load is undetectable, there’s no risk to your boyfriend. Please see here: http://i-base.info/u-equals-u/
One thing to stress is that if you’d rather have sex with a condom, it’s your right to do so. It’s your body and no one can dictate what you do with your body and his includes your boyfriend.

    Hi Kiara,

Almost everyone will forget or be late at some time – and this will be fine. But there is a difference between an occasional missed dose and regularly forgetting on a daily or weekly basis. Please see this guide for more info.

But why do you have to switch or skip doses? Is it because of shift work or another reason why the meds don’t fit in with your life?

Some ARVs need to be taken before bedtime. Others need to be taken with food. But you can talk to your doctor and ask for meds that are easier for you to take.

Please see these tips for taking your ARVs in the right way.

How’s the treatment going? What meds are you taking. And do you have access to your viral load and CD4 results? Please let us know.

    Hi Anonymous,

It’s great that your boyfriend started HIV treatment. And even when starting, there is a window of about an hour either side of his target time when it is still fine to take them. So this is likely to be fine.

But if he’s going to continue to work late he can move the target time to 22:00 or maybe 23:00. Please see this Q&A for a similar question and more info.
