Q and A

Question

Can i change the time i take my ARVs?

I take my ARVs at 8am and 8pm. Can i change it to 10am and 10pm?

Answer

Hi,

This is not a problem as long as you consistently take them at the new time. Jumping back and forth mean you have a risk of developing resistance. This would mean your meds would stop working well.

People do change the time they take their meds for all sorts of reasons though. Again this is ok as long as you keep taking regularly at the new time.

The only concern about switching from evening to morning is if your combination include the drug efavirenz. Efavirenz needs to be taken 1-2 hours before you sleep, so you reduce side effects.

Hi Dudu, I am sorry that you have not been getting the support that should be provided. Doing your own research and reading can help – so this is good. It can also help to contact an HIV organisation in your country which will have other people in a similar situation. The TLD will also protect your baby. If your viral load is undetectable and there are no complications then you can have a natural birth. The antenatal clinic will hopefully be more helpful. They are the best people to ask about feeding as this varies in different countries. Good luck with everything.

Hi, I am pregnant and found out I’m HIV positive during my 12 weeks scan appointment. I started my Treatment immediately . My Dr never explained anything to me . No counseling I was diagnosed from single test no follow up test was done. The only positive thing she said was my baby is okay. She prescribed TLD for me and never told me how I should take my medication. I have been taking my medication correctly because of this platform. Please advise if I can breastfeed my baby and which birth method is low risk for my little one. She is my 1st child .

    Hi Babu

If your viral load is undetectable, there is no risk to your partner, even if you don’t use condoms.
    See:

Please also talk to your doctor about any side effects as a different combination might stop the headaches.
