Q and A

Question

Can i change the time i take my ARVs?

I take my ARVs at 8am and 8pm. Can i change it to 10am and 10pm?

Answer

Hi,

This is not a problem as long as you consistently take them at the new time. Jumping back and forth mean you have a risk of developing resistance. This would mean your meds would stop working well.

People do change the time they take their meds for all sorts of reasons though. Again this is ok as long as you keep taking regularly at the new time.

The only concern about switching from evening to morning is if your combination include the drug efavirenz. Efavirenz needs to be taken 1-2 hours before you sleep, so you reduce side effects.

    Hi Precious,

Ideally volutrip should be taken in the morning, this is due to the possible side effects that someone might experience if they take it at night- please see here:

However, if you want to try taking your meds in the evening then you can do this. Just be mindful of the possible side effects.

    Hi Pretty,

ARVs should be taken at a time that works for you, however some meds need to be taken in the morning or in the evening, this is due to possible side effects.

If you do change to the morning, you’ll need to be minded about possible side effects. If there are issues you can just change back to the evening.

    Hi Trevor,

For us to be able to help, I’m going to need to ask you some Q’s.

What ARVs are you taking? How long have you been on them for? Have you always felt like your heart was racing when taking meds?

    Hi JD,

You’ve nothing to worry about, just take your meds as normal. You’ll be fine.

    Hi Guys,

Undetectable here for 5 months. So I have my alarm set at 9:30pm but I usually take it a bit later. Yesterday, I fell sleep and I woke up today at 7am and I remembered I forgot it. I took it inmediately but now I don’t know if I should change my schedule to the morning and continue at 7am or if I should take it as I do normally at have two doses today. I’m really scared. Last month I missed a dose because they didn’t gave me the ARVs at time
