Q and A

Question

Can i change the time i take my ARVs?

I take my ARVs at 8am and 8pm. Can i change it to 10am and 10pm?

Answer

Hi,

This is not a problem as long as you consistently take them at the new time. Jumping back and forth mean you have a risk of developing resistance. This would mean your meds would stop working well.

People do change the time they take their meds for all sorts of reasons though. Again this is ok as long as you keep taking regularly at the new time.

The only concern about switching from evening to morning is if your combination include the drug efavirenz. Efavirenz needs to be taken 1-2 hours before you sleep, so you reduce side effects.

Hi Annah, Acitptega is a generic version of TLD. It is a combination of TLD. This link will explain more: https://i-base.info/guides/14970 TLD is a combination with few side effects. 1 in 20 will experience poor sleep, taking TLD earlier in the day will help prevent this side effect. Mood changes have also been noted as a potential side effect. In some instances nausea, dizziness and headaches have been recorded. Though described as mild and manageable.

Hi Mzwandile, I do not recognise Lavem as a medication to manage HIV. Are you perhaps referring to a medication on this list?: https://i-base.info/guides/12423

Is it possible you meant Lavern? This is an HIV ARV combination. It is a version of TLD. TLD is a first line combination therapy as recommended by WHO guidelines.

Hi Mary, is there a reason you would like to skip a day? In general, if you are undetectable missing a day is not likely to cause a problem. This is not advised though as it does increase risk of resistance to medication.

Hi Rbby, it is usually okay to take you HIV meds at the best time for you. It is also fine to change to a different time if this turns out to be better.

If your meds include a drug called efavirenz, then they should be taken just before you go to bed.

If your meds include a drug called dolutegravir, this is best taken in the morning.

Please ask a pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure.
