Q and A

Question

How long does an HIV negative infant take the Ilvitrim syrup?

For how long can an infant take the ilvitrim suspension syrup when tested negative?

Answer

Hi

Please ask your doctor about this. The doctor will tell you why it is important and how long it need to be used for.

Usually it will be for at least 18 months. However, it also needs to be continued if breastfeeding is longer than this.

Ilvitrim syrup is a combination of two antibiotics. It protects your baby from different infections.

    Hi Rejoice,

Are you breastfeeding? If you are is your viral load undetectable? How many HIV tests has your child had?

    Hi Samantha,

It’s good to hear that your baby tested HIV positive.

But please talk to your doctor or nurse about the best way to feed your baby now that she’s 6 months old. They are the ones who can give the best advice for you locally.

It’s also important to check with your doctor about ilvitrim suspension. They can give you the right advice about treatment with this medication too.

    Hi Sisca,

It’s great to hear that your viral load is undetectable, this is really important, it means that your HIV is under control.

Feeding guidelines for babies vary depending on where it is that someone lives. In the UK (where i-base are based) women aren’t adviced to breastfeed, here we use formula.

Babies born to positive mothers shouldn’t be mix feed, they should be given either breast milk or formula, but not both. The reason is that there is an increased risk of transmission. Therefore, if you live in a country that supports breastfeeding you need to chose between formula and breast milk.

Ilvitrim is an antibiotic, it’s not an ARV. If you continue to breastfeed your baby should be using ARVs.

I’m HIV and my viral load was undetectable,my baby is 6 weeks and was given Zivodine and NVP from birth. Today my clinic told me she Jo longer needs to take previous meds and gave her Ilvitrim.

My concern is that I’m currently mixed feeding and won’t be able to breastfeed only, will that put my child in danger of being infected? Or will this Ilvitrim help her, also what exactly is this suspension used for because my sister had stomach ache and was given Ilvitrim.
    Please help

    Hi Elzette,

Sorry, but we are not doctors at i-Base. But please talk to your doctor or clinic about what HIV meds will be best for the children.

Are you taking HIV treatment too? Please let us know what ARVs you are taking. And if you have access to your CD4 and viral load results, please tell us what they are.
