Q and A

Question

How long does an HIV negative infant take the Ilvitrim syrup?

For how long can an infant take the ilvitrim suspension syrup when tested negative?

Answer

Hi

Please ask your doctor about this. The doctor will tell you why it is important and how long it need to be used for.

Usually it will be for at least 18 months. However, it also needs to be continued if breastfeeding is longer than this.

Ilvitrim syrup is a combination of two antibiotics. It protects your baby from different infections.

Hi Lillians, thanks. Congratulation on your new baby – everything sounds really good. The doctor is giving you good advice. Because of your other health and treatment, it is safe for the baby to stop nevirapine syrup after 6 weeks. The PCR results will also stay negative. I wish you and your baby every happiness.

I’M HIV positive and my viral load was undetectable before giving birth. My baby is 12 weeks and her HIV results came out NEGATIVE twice(from birth and at 6 weeks)at 10 weeks she did PCR test and her pediatrician told me to stop giving her the nevirapine after 6 weeks, now my baby is not on any medication but she doing well and she was never sick,so will the PCR results come out negative even if she stopped taking the syrup???

    Hi Lindo,

The medication that your baby has been given isn’t an ARV, it’s an antibiotic. If you’re not using ARVs your viral load will rise. If it’s risen, or it rises your baby will be at risk. Though your clinic is closed (which country are you in) is there somewhere else you can go? Do you know how long the clinic will be closed for?

If possible you should change to formula.

    Hi Zama,

If you were advised to give your baby ARVs for 6 weeks, then ideally this is what you should have done.
It’s not possible to say if the risk will be increased due to you stopping meds early. However, the risk, if there is one will be minimal.

    Hi
I’m HIV+ and my baby is 6 weeks.
I was breastfeeding him for 4 weeks and now he’s on formula. My problem is I stopped giving him nevirapine the day I stop breastfeeding him.
Is it compulsory to give him nevirapine for 6 weeks?
Will he be infected because I stopped 2 weeks before time?

    Hi Sesi,

I’m sorry to hear about the different results for your baby. But what does your doctor say? You can ask them to check these results.

You can also ask about your viral load results to see if your HIV meds are working well.

It sounds like you’re doing all you can. But you can ask your doctor for help to make sure your meds are best for you. You can ask for the best advice on feeding your baby too.

Please let us know how you get on. If you have access to your viral load results please let us know. Please also tell us what HIV meds you’re taking.

If you baby has a rash you need to take her to see a doctor. This also applies to you.
