Q and A

Question

How long does an HIV negative infant take the Ilvitrim syrup?

For how long can an infant take the ilvitrim suspension syrup when tested negative?

Answer

Hi

Please ask your doctor about this. The doctor will tell you why it is important and how long it need to be used for.

Usually it will be for at least 18 months. However, it also needs to be continued if breastfeeding is longer than this.

Ilvitrim syrup is a combination of two antibiotics. It protects your baby from different infections.

    Hi Sindiswa

Thanks – and congratulations on your new baby – this must be a very happy and special time for you.

Everything the doctor has recommended sounds very good.

It is very safe to also use Ilvitrim. The is a combination antibiotic that protects against different infections.

Please ask your doctor or nurse if you have any worries – and good luck with everything :)

    Hi Mj,

ilvitrim is an antibiotic, it isn’t an ARV. Your childs doctor should be able to tell you how long they need to take ilvitrim.

    Hi Unknow,

All babies are given a course of ARVs when they are born, please see here: https://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy/will-baby-need-hiv-drugs In some countries babies are given doctrim, this doesn’t however increase the risk of infection.

You need to ask your babies doctor why they’ve been given doctrim. Also have you had your baby tested yet?

    Hi
I’m HIV Positive, my baby was given nevirapine for 6 weeks and and after they have changed it to doctrim suspension. What are the chances of her getting infected?

Hi Tlhogi, Bindopin is a generic version of nevirapine. Although used less often for adults, it is still common as a short course in newborn babies. Great that your new son tested negative. It is still important to give him the meds that your doctors recommends.

    Hi Star.

ilvitrim is an antibiotic, it isn’t an ARV. If you want to stop giving your son this medication you’ll need to talk to your doctor, it shouldn’t however be an issue.
