Q and A

Question

I don’t believe I am HIV positive – but if I am I want to start treatment?

I was diagnosed March 2016. I am still not on meds just because I am not sure I have HIV. I had am operation when I get tested for HIV for a really bad groin infection that i think affect my results. Later when the doctor said I am HIV I refused to believe just because they were so strange all the time saying different things and never say the same thing twice.

I don’t trust them at all. I didn’t have any symptoms at all but the test shows I am positive. They did HIV DNA which is not for finding out that you’re HIV positive. All the time when I asked them to see my results they always said no. I wanted to have it printed and they just refused. How come ? I’m the HIV positive person and I don’t have my results?

They said I have CD4 350 and VL 33 000. I’m really confused and I want to retest again. Also, If I am really HIV positive I want to start the treatment because the last months I’ve been thinking about it.

Answer

Hi

Thanks for your post and I am sorry for the confusion at your hospital over the results.

I can’t talk about why you didn’t get a printouts of your results, but based on the other details in your email, it sounds like you are HIV positive.

Even if you were worried about the first HIV test, the second viral load test shows that you are HIV positive.

Please talk to your doctor about this – and about starting treatment.

You didn’t say where you live but based on your CD4 count you should be able to start treatment you should be able to start treatment in all countries.

Modern HIV treatment (also called ART) is very effective. This online guide has more information:

    Hi Sya,

This all depends on where it is that you are and what your immigration status is. Where are you currently living?

    Hi Nomsa,

Divuwin is a generic version of Combivir. It contains two drugs, zidovudine (AZT) and lamivudine (3TC). But there are once daily combinations of this class of drug, which are easier to take than Divuwin. For example, Truvada. Modern HIV treatment usually means taking 3 drugs (or more). What other drug are you taking.

You can talk to your doctor about changing treatment to a single dose, once daily tablet. You can also talk to your doctor about the many reasons it’s not possible for you to take it. It’s important to find out what HIV treatment fits in with you and your schedule.
