Q and A

Question

What are the pills marked with M171 and D100?

Answer

If your doctor prescribed HIV medication that looks like the pill in the picture and has M171 embossed, this is likely to be Tribuss.

tribuss

Picture: Tribuss, manufactured by Aspen.

The picture is not very clear, but M171 is one one side and D100 is on the other.

This is based on the information at this website.

Tribuss is a generic version of Atripla and it is manufactured by Aspen. It is widely used in South Africa.

Just like Atripla, Tribuss contains three active HIV drugs – efavirenz, tenofovir-DF and emtricitabine.

Sometimes Tribuss is mainly used as an HIV treatment by people who are HIV positive. However, this is an older treatment that is steadily being switched to newer drugs in many countries.

Some countries use Tribuss as a way to prevent HIV after recent risk for people who are HIV negative. This way of using HIV meds is called PEP. Tribuss is not recommended as PEP in most countries though because of the risk of side effects that are higher in people who are HIV negative.

    Hi Shishi,

I’m sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. But it’s great that you’ve started taking ARVs. Starting HIV treatment (ART) has important benefits for your health.

The only way to know your viral load is to have a test. Please ask your doctor when they will do this.

However, as soon as you start ART your viral load is dramatically reduced. Viral load can drop by 90% within the first few days, and by 99% within the first few weeks. And this gives your CD4 count the chance to recover. Please see this page from ART in Pictures that shows how quickly ART starts to work.

You can also talk to your doctor about whether to take other meds, such as antibiotics, to help stop other infections while your CD4 count is 81.

    Hi Beatiful,

I’m sorry but I don’t know what this pill is. What does it say on the packet?

But how’s your ARV treatment going? What meds are you taking? And if you have access to your CD4 count and viral load results, please let us know what they say.

    Hi Makola,

Purbac is an antibiotic that can help prevent infection if you have a low CD4 count. This is often given with HIV treatment. I’m not sure what privacy is, but Dumiva is a generic version of Kivexa.

Do you have access to your CD4 count and viral load results? Please let us know.
