Q and A

Question

What are the pills marked with M171 and D100?

Answer

If your doctor prescribed HIV medication that looks like the pill in the picture and has M171 embossed, this is likely to be Tribuss.

tribuss

Picture: Tribuss, manufactured by Aspen.

The picture is not very clear, but M171 is one one side and D100 is on the other.

This is based on the information at this website.

Tribuss is a generic version of Atripla and it is manufactured by Aspen. It is widely used in South Africa.

Just like Atripla, Tribuss contains three active HIV drugs – efavirenz, tenofovir-DF and emtricitabine.

Sometimes Tribuss is mainly used as an HIV treatment by people who are HIV positive. However, this is an older treatment that is steadily being switched to newer drugs in many countries.

Some countries use Tribuss as a way to prevent HIV after recent risk for people who are HIV negative. This way of using HIV meds is called PEP. Tribuss is not recommended as PEP in most countries though because of the risk of side effects that are higher in people who are HIV negative.

    Hi Siyanda,

What’s the name of the new ARV that you’ve been given, that is other than RF 21.

    Hi Nomangaliso,

i-base are based in the UK, so if you’re having issues with access please get in touch with the following org: https://tac.org.za/

With regards to your combination, it you’ve had issues with Atripla then I’m surprised to here that you’re still being given Efavirenz, has this been explained to you? Also in SA there are other combinations, so if you can ask about these.

    Good evening;
I am puzzled by the difference in the ARV drug changes. I have just noticed that my local clinic gave me strange tables from what I am used to and it is already at night. Previously I got incorrect meds and I returned it. I seldom get a full pack of Dumiva (Abacavir /Lamivudine) they always give me 10 or 14 tablets of this combination which I take with Efavirenz 600mg. I find it so unfair to go to the clinic twice a month to get a month supply which Pepfar donates and we are always told there is insufficient stock.
I started on Atripla in 2014 but I had kidney failure since I was changed I seldom get a full supply for a month. I spend the whole day at the clinic just for 14 tablets and have to go back again. It is much more difficult as I constantly have to ask for time off where I recently got a job which is on contract and am still on probation.
We really appreciate and know you are doing all you can for south Africans to get ARV’s but the service is shocking in our facilities and most people default because of that.
Thanking you for your continued support. I am in tears as I have to go back again to he hauled at.

    Hi Anonymous,

There’s only a risk if your partners viral load is detectable. If your partners viral load is undetectable then he can’t transmit HIV to you.
What you’ve been given isn’t PEP, it’s a different type of medication.

My boyfriend is HIV positive we had sex while I was on my periods then the condom busted in the morning I went to the clinic for PEP they gave me this M171 pink pill pls tell me how does it work, does it mean I’m already infected?

    Hi Lungy,

What does your doctor say about your viral load? If you’re undetectable you cannot transmit HIV even if you don’t us condoms.

Please see undetectable = untransmittable (U=U) here.

Do you have access to your viral load and CD4 results, and what HIV meds are you taking? Please let us know.
