Q and A

Question

What are the pills marked with M171 and D100?

Answer

If your doctor prescribed HIV medication that looks like the pill in the picture and has M171 embossed, this is likely to be Tribuss.

tribuss

Picture: Tribuss, manufactured by Aspen.

The picture is not very clear, but M171 is one one side and D100 is on the other.

This is based on the information at this website.

Tribuss is a generic version of Atripla and it is manufactured by Aspen. It is widely used in South Africa.

Just like Atripla, Tribuss contains three active HIV drugs – efavirenz, tenofovir-DF and emtricitabine.

Sometimes Tribuss is mainly used as an HIV treatment by people who are HIV positive. However, this is an older treatment that is steadily being switched to newer drugs in many countries.

Some countries use Tribuss as a way to prevent HIV after recent risk for people who are HIV negative. This way of using HIV meds is called PEP. Tribuss is not recommended as PEP in most countries though because of the risk of side effects that are higher in people who are HIV negative.

Hi Baby, Dumiva is a different name for Kivexa. It has two drugs in it, these are abacavir and 3TC. Standard treatment for HIV is usually made up from three drugs. So efavirenz is the third HIV medication for your treatment. Different companies give these pills different names. You can ask your doctor to let you know the name of the drug, not just the brand name of the pill, so that you can tell when your treatment is changed.

Hi I have been taking Dumiva and the other pill it was written M 109 I think since I started taking the meds in December, today I was given the same Dumiva and this new one it’s called Efavirenz. So my question is do they jst change your pills without informing you

Hi Nolubabalo, Are you taking Tribuss? Some people feel dizzy or have bad dreams when taking it. You can talk to your doctor about this and ask if there are different ARVs that can be better for you.

Why do I see things that normal people don’t see…when I just ate my ARVs

    Hi Nadi,

i-base advocates aren’t medical doctors, therefore this is something that you should talk to your doctor about.

I had severe shingles for a while. When they healed from outside it’s like they settled in my chest cos I could not bend, talk and walk with difficulties. Now I am recovering slowly and taking 5 drops of black seed oil morning and night. I still take my Tribuss religiously. The medication my dr gave me for pains and inflammation gives me headaches and I stopped taking it. No longer headaches. Was I right stopping them? Nadi

I suffer no side effects at all. Tribuss works well on me. I want to do a cd4count and viral load count soon. I am doing well. I also have mo stress and have a positive attitude. Moreover I have a family that is supportive. I count myself blessed. Eating right is one of my strongest points. My life is up to me. I am my greatest motivator. Nadi.

    Hi Nadi,

Many people are positive for years and they aren’t aware of their status, so yes its very possible.

How are you doing on the Tribuss?

  10. Nadi

My cd4 count is 493. I think I was infected in 2009. Is it possible for the virus to stay in my system for so long without symptoms? I am on my 16th day using Tribuss.
