Q and A

Question

Is it safe to take Aluvia, lamivudine and zidovudine when you’re pregnant?

Hi I’m am currently taking Aluvia 200mg/50mg and Lamivudine and Zidovudine 150/300. I suspect that I am pregnant. Should I be worried about my treatment possibly harming my baby? Is it safe to carry on with the pregnancy?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

The ARVs that you are taking are safe to take whilst pregnant. Therefore, you do not need to worry about your combination.

    Hi Abel,

Being on HIV treatment (ART) means that you are in a good position to have a baby without transmitting HIV to you partner. Here is the answer to a similar question.

First, you have to have an undetectable viral load for several months. If your viral load is less than 50 copies that means it is undetectable. And undetectable = untransmittable (U=U) even without using condoms. You can read more about U=U here.

    Hi Xoliswa,
If your partner is HIV negative then it’s not possible he can transmit HIV to another person.

Hi Ivy, once viral rebound is confirmed (usually this takes two viral load tests), the earlier you change treatment, the better. In this case, 2,200 is still very low, so even if there was low-level resistance, your new regime is likely to work well and work quickly. Can I ask how long you were on the first treatment and how long your viral load was undetectable. Also, did your doctor talk about why the first treatment might have failed.

i have relapsed on my first treatment and my viral load went up to 2264. i have now changed to another regime (ritonavir/lopinavir, lamivudine/zidovudine). What i want to know is will i recover and at what point should they have changed my treatment before it built up resistance?

    Hi Suzan,

If you get a rash when taking ARVs, its important to go and see your doctor. This is because it can be a sign of a serious side effect. Do you know why you were given AZT?

I am taking aluvia, 3tc and AZT as pep and i developed rash all over my body, is it one of the side effects of medication?
