Q and A

Question

Is it safe to take Aluvia, lamivudine and zidovudine when you’re pregnant?

Hi I’m am currently taking Aluvia 200mg/50mg and Lamivudine and Zidovudine 150/300. I suspect that I am pregnant. Should I be worried about my treatment possibly harming my baby? Is it safe to carry on with the pregnancy?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

The ARVs that you are taking are safe to take whilst pregnant. Therefore, you do not need to worry about your combination.

    Hi Gadi,

CD4 counts can and so fluctuate, this is common. The drop won’t be due to you having sex without a condom. Your CD4 count is still very high.

Hi am on Aluvia and Tenemine my cd4 was 1200 then 1039 and I am having unprotected sex can this be the cause of not using the condom for my cd4 count to drop.

    Hi NS,

Your test came back as HIV negative so it’s not clear why the nurse gave you Combozil and Alluvia. Please can you and your partner check with the clinic and find out about your results.

Blood groups such as 0 can be described as positive and negative. But this describes an antigen that tells you what blood group you are. It’s a blood group result and not a result for an HIV test.

    Hi Nqo,

Your CD4 count is low so its important that you’re on the right medication. Who has prescribed you a one tablet regime? How long have you been on meds for? Other than the ARVs what else are you taking?

Hi, I’m currently taking Aluvia 200/50 and lamzid 150/300 and have defaulted more than once. Is there any other regimen that can be used to improve my cd4 count in case this doe not suppress the viral load anymore?
    Thank you.

    Dear Anon,

Unfortunately we are not doctors at i-Base. So it’s important to talk to your doctor very soon about your symptoms to check if they are signs of pre-eclampsia.

You can ask the doctor if the change in regimen was to get your viral load to undetectable. Switching treatment while pregnant shouldn’t affect the foetus. But if the symptoms are side effects you can ask if there is alternative treatment.

Hi,thanks alot for ur website.Pls keep me anon.Ive been on tribuss from 2014 n have defaulted more than once,i’m currently 5-6 months pregnant and my doctor changed my regimen, from first to second line-aluvia and tenemine.I am experiencing severe headaches and sometimes neck stiffness .My question is;what is the danger of switching regimens while pregnant for the fetus?will my unborn child be able to adapt to these changes N is my headache n stiff neck a side effect of aluvia or a sign of preeclampsia becus protein was also found in my urine? It’s been a week since i’ve been on it,n if it is side effects-when will they stop?
NB-i’ve been having headaches from the start of my pregnancy but now it is worse-is it the pregnancy or the meds?pls help
