Q and A

Question

Can I still play rugby?

Hello.

I was recently diagnosed with HIV. No symptoms yet and no need for treatment. Up till now I have played a lot of rugby and would love to continue.

My HIV specialist says there is a very low risk of transmission and no case has been recorded.

Is this really true? I would hate to pass the virus on to someone else.

Answer

Your doctor is right.

The chances of transmission during sports activities are really low. The benefits for you, however, are great, as rugby will keep you fit and healthy, and it is something you enjoy.

You need to be cautious (as rugby can be rough) to make sure if you are bleeding that your blood does come in contact with other players.

Apart from that, it is safe. Good luck and enjoy the games.
