Q and A

Question

Is it safe to take Luvigen when pregnant?

Is it safe to take Luvigen once pregnant?

Answer

Hi, how are you?

It is safe to take Luvigen while pregnant. Luvigen is a generic combination of Tenofovir DF, Lamivudine, and Dolutegravir Together known as TLD. There is a small increased risk of neural tube defects due to Dolutegravir, but TLD still remains first line management for women of child bearing age as recommended by UK and World Health guidelines.

In the UK it is recommended that women supplement their ART with Folic Acid to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, and do so for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Please ask if you have any further questions,

Josh.

Hi Zanele, this is becoming a common switch. This is because Alluvia is a ‘boosted’ treatment. This means there is greater potential for side effects and long term complications. Even though Alluvia is second line, because it is ‘protease inhibitor’ based (the type of drug that it is), evidence supports switching to dolutegravir based combinations – these are INSTI’s (suppresses HIV in a different way). Dolutegravir based regimens are now first line, but they are also newer drugs which may be the reason you were not initially given this option. Luvigen (dolutegravir based) is a medication with fewer side effects and often better tolerated by people. You can find more information about Luvigen (TLD) here: https://i-base.info/guides/14970

Hi Kwakhanya, congratulations on your pregnancy. Luvigen will not have a negative effect on your baby. In fact it is recommended to continue taking your medication while pregnant. There is no risk to taking your medication, but stopping will increase the risk of HIV transmission. It is very safe for both you and the baby to continue and is the best way to keep you both healthy.

Hi Zandile, you are allowed to use Luvigen while wanting to get/are pregnant.

Luvigen will not stop you getting pregnant. Staying on your medication throughout pregnancy is how best to keep you and baby healthy.

I want to know whether Luvigen can prevent you from getting pregnant or stop you to get pregnant while you are using them?. Luvigen is allowed to be used by a person who want to get pregnant?.
