Q and A

Question

Dolutagravir and Magnesium supplements.

I am using Dolutegravir and i’m struggling every night to sleep. Are there any pills that I can use to help me sleep? I’veread about Magnesium supplements, can I try them?

Answer

Hi Zack, how are you doing?

What time have you been taking Dolutegraivr? It is best taken in the morning as one its side effects is poor sleep.

You can take magnesium to help you sleep but it does interact with Dolutegravir. It is important that you take Magnesium 2 hours after, or 6 hours before your dose of Dolutegravir. Taking them together would reduce how much Dolutegravir is absorbed.

Though if you move your dose to Dolutegravir to the morning, and have Magnesium when you are off to bed this will not be a problem.

If you have another question, let us know.

Josh.

Hi Nicholas, a magnesium supplement would need to be taken either 2 hours before dolutegravir or 6 hours after. Taking magnesium closer to the time of dolutegravir can reduce how much dolutegravir is absorbed.

By how much is your blood glucose spiking? and is it being monitored for diabetic purposes?

I am taking dolutegravir and it is causing my blood glucose to spike. Higher than normal. I have also learnt that’s one of its side effects. Medical experts suggest this may be due to the dolutegravir suppressing magnesium absorbtion which aids in glucose control. So can I take a magnesium supplement to help with this problem so mu blood glucose will be more balanced?

Dear Josh I am taking Trenvir at 8pm and Magnesium Glycinate an hour after to help me sleep. Is there any interaction on these tablets?
