Q and A

Question

I have completed my course of PEP. Will it work?

I have been exposed to HIV and started PEP within 48 hours and continued for 28 days. How likely this is going to work?

Answer

HI, how are you doing?

You started PEP within the required timeframe and completed the full course. This gives you the best chance of PEP working. PEP is 80-90% effective when taken correctly, which you have.

How effective PEP is also needs to take into account the risk of the first exposure. If it was low risk, taking PEP will further reduce the likelihood of being HIV positive.

Josh.

Hi Teddy, this shows you were not HIV positive after the PEP.

I have tested NON REACTIVE 24 weeks after my last pep dose (28 weeks post exposure) at a clinic with a 3rd generation hiv blood rapid test.

Is it Conclusive or need further test?

Hi Prosper, unfortunately taking PEP a week after exposure is not early enough for it to be effective.

That being said it is great that you have been testing negative. For a test to be conclusive, the minimum time you can test will be using a combined test at 6 weeks post your course of PEP.

The symptoms you are experiencing are very generic and would not indicate HIV by themselves.

After I was exposure to a hiv positive girl on 1st February, I started pep very late on 9th February till 11th March (30 days) On April 5th I did a test with Roche combi and PRC negative, 24 days POST PEP 62 days post exposure do you think is conclusive results?
Am now having fever headache lost of appetite,,, just 2 weeks more to three months of my exposure

Hi Charles, yes this test is conclusive. As you have waited 12 weeks after PEP you can consider this test conclusive. You do not have HIV.

I tested negative 12 weeks after my last pep dose (16 weeks post exposure) with a 3rd generation rapid test.

    Can I close this ?

Hi Steve, TLD is PEP. You were right to use this combination as such. An Oraquick test is not suitable to use until 3 months after PEP. This is because it looks at HIV antibodies – these may not be made by the body yet which is why you need to wait a while to test. A 4th generation antigen/antibody test would be suitable at 6 weeks (6 more days). It is likely you can access this test at a local sexual health clinic.

    Hello
    Firstly,is LTD drugs PEP?
Okay,I was exposed to HIV in the last 68 days.I started PEP after 55 hours and continued for 30 days.
Yesterday(1st February 2022) that’s 67 days after exposure and 36 days after completing PEP, i did the Oraquick test and the results came out to be negative. So my question is,is this result conclusive?

    Thanks.
