Q and A

Question

I finished PEP. Now I have symptoms?

3 days after finishing PEP I am having stomach pain and diarrhoea.

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Side effects from PEP would present while taking PEP. Now that you have finished taking PEP these symptoms would not be caused by your medication.

It is also too early for this to be a sign of seroconversion. A number of things can cause stomach pain and diarrhoea. PEP and HIV are not likely in this case. If your symptoms continue/worsen it is important you seek medical help.

Josh.

    Hi there,
I had u protected anal sex and went into pep less than 24 hours after. I am now 3 weeks into pep and have a runny nose should I be concerned? The other person has now apparently tested negative for HIV and is on PREP. Should I be worried still?

Hi Abdi, it is a good sign that you have had a negative test. For a conclusive result you will need to test 42 days (or more) after the last dose of PEP using a 4th generation antigen/antibody test.

More information about testing can be found here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

    1: Headache
2: fever ( Although doctor told me I have malaria
    3: Wound on the mouth
    4: Flu with dry cough

And now is 32 days after I finished PEP and doctor told me result was Non reactive

Hi Elisha, these are not signs of seroconversion and as you are on PEP the likelihood of HIV is even lower.

Please speak to your doctor about other causes of these symptoms if they remain ongoing.

See here for more information about testing and transmission: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing
