I have been HIV+ since 1985 and now am on Biktarvy. After 8 years of success with the medication I am now 65 and can no longer get assistance with the cost so I must stop all drug therapy for HIV/AIDS. What will happen to me now? Will I get AIDS and die right away?
Answer
Hi, how are you doing?
I am so sorry to hear about this. Is there any local HIV charity/organisation in your area that you can contact? They may be able to offer assistance, whether it financial or supportive. The largest is the AIDS Drug Assistance Programme (ADAP).
You are not going to die now. The course of HIV varies drastically between people and a timeline cannot be certain. It is not going to be an overnight change and it is quite possible you notice nothing for years.
I understand it may not be ideal but have considered buying medication online? Or speaking with your doctor about any other HIV combinations that you may still have access to? As you are over 65 you can also access Medicare – the social provision for older citizens in the US.
Josh.
