Q and A

Question

Why do I have insomnia after switching from Volutrip to Ranega?

Since they have changed my Volutrip pill to Ranega I don’t sleep. My longest sleep time is 3hrs. What can you advise? I don’t have any side effects except this insomnia.

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

I am sorry to hear you are having difficulty sleeping. How long were you on Volutrip before it switched?

Volutrip and Ranega are the same medication. They have different names and might look different because they are made by different companies. This means they contain the same three drugs: tenofovir D, dolutegravir and lamivudine.

Although there should not be any difference in side effects, sometimes people do notice a small difference. You might be sensitive to one version more than the other, but this should just for the first week or so.

What time do you take your medication?

Dolutegravir can cause insomnia in about 1 in 20 people.

Taking your meds in the morning instead of at night helps prevents this side effect. The effect would be worn off by the time you go to sleep.

Josh.
