Question

Why do I have insomnia after switching from Volutrip to Ranega?

Since they have changed my Volutrip pill to Ranega I don’t sleep. My longest sleep time is 3hrs. What can you advise? I don’t have any side effects except this insomnia.

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

I am sorry to hear you are having difficulty sleeping. How long were you on Volutrip before it switched?

Volutrip and Ranega are the same medication. They have different names and might look different because they are made by different companies. This means they contain the same three drugs: tenofovir D, dolutegravir and lamivudine.

Although there should not be any difference in side effects, sometimes people do notice a small difference. You might be sensitive to one version more than the other, but this should just for the first week or so.

What time do you take your medication?

Dolutegravir can cause insomnia in about 1 in 20 people.

Taking your meds in the morning instead of at night helps prevents this side effect. The effect would be worn off by the time you go to sleep.

Josh.

Hello Sipho and thank you for the question.

It is very important that you understand that people living with HIV, on effective treatment (which means viral load under 50 copies/ml) cannot pass on HIV to their sexual partners.

Here is a link about HIV transmission:

Even if that is not the case and you have sex with someone whose status you don’t know PEP will protect you.
Have you considered using PrEP instead?

However, please note: your partners are entitled to their confidentiality. They don’t have to tell you what their status is.

It is not their responsibility to protect you. It’s your responsibility to protect yourself.

Please educate yourself with the above links.

As for the symptoms you are mentioning: you all need to visit a doctor to get checked out.
This is not HIV but it is something else you pass on to each other.

Hi I had unpotected sex with someone who is hiv positive on HIV treatment with Volutrip. I saw she showed me a viral load certificate of 20 RNA copies/ml after that I went to clinic and I was also given Volutrip as PEP. After finishing I started to have painful stomach that won’t go. Now I also have a sore throat and painful neck. My child has developed rash all over her body. Her mom was also having stomach pain and also flu with tonsilitis. After I slept with her, can it be Hiv? I bought 4 HIV test I used all of them two developed faint colourless line after hours can this be symptoms?
