Question

Switching from Aluvia to dolutegravir…

Hello, I have been changed from Aluvia to dolutegravir but was told to continue with AZT and 3TC. Will it not have a negative effect?

Answer

Hi, how are you?

This is a common switch and should not have a negative impact. Do you know your current viral load? This switch is often done when the person has a suppressed viral load.

Aluvia is a boosted combination. This means it has an extra drug which makes the other drug in Aluvia work harder. This is not always needed and can cause worse side effects. How have you been tolerating your current combination?

Aluvia is a protease inhibitor and dolutegravir is an integrase inhibitor. This means they work slightly differently, but they both work just as well as each other.

Hi Muzy, how long had you been on this combination? AZT is known to cause body fat changes and switching treatment can help reverse this.

The longer you were on the combination, the less reversible it is. Dolutegravir can help recover weight.

Hi Garce, both of these are 2-drug combinations. Aluvia contains lopinovir and ritinovir. Zovilam conains lamivudine and zidovudine.

Have you been told to take these medications together? Alluvia uses ritinovir to boost how well lopinovir works. Essentially this means you have one active drug against HIV (lopinovir)

A combination of 3 medications is usually given to treat HIV, in this case Aluvia and Zovilam would be a 3-drug combination with the addition of the boosting drug.

Have you had any tests to check the function/health of your liver? As combining zidovudine and ritinovir together can increase the risk of liver toxicity, testing before starting them together can help prevent this side effect occurring.
